Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment (ReSPECT)
What is ReSPECT?
ReSPECT stands for Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment.
It is a personalised plan that records your wishes and clinical recommendations to guide healthcare professionals if you become seriously unwell and are unable to make decisions for yourself.
What does a ReSPECT plan include?
A ReSPECT plan may include:
- What matters most to you and your priorities for care
- Treatments that may or may not be appropriate in an emergency
- Clinical recommendations agreed with a healthcare professional
It is not just about resuscitation and is not the same as a DNACPR form, although this may be included if relevant.
Who is ReSPECT for?
ReSPECT can be helpful for:
- People with long-term health conditions
- People who are frail or have complex medical needs
- Anyone who wants to plan ahead for emergency care
It is voluntary and only completed following a conversation between you and a healthcare professional.
Reviewing your plan.
Your ReSPECT plan should be reviewed regularly, especially if your health or wishes change.
