Childhood vaccination schedule is changing
From 1 January 2026, the routine childhood vaccination schedule is changing. Instead of the current MMR vaccine (measles, mumps and rubella), children will now be offered a combined MMRV vaccine, which also provides protection against chickenpox (varicella).
The first dose will continue to be given at around 12 months of age. The second dose will usually be offered at the new 18-month appointment. However, children who present for their booster at 3 years and 4 months will also be offered the MMRV vaccine, rather than MMR alone.
The aim of this change is to provide earlier, broader protection against four common childhood infections and to help reduce the risk of illness, complications, and outbreaks in the community.
If you have any questions about what this means for your child, including eligibility or timing, please contact the surgery and we will be happy to help.
